There was a time when birth order theory was not discussed much. It was the norm to simply accept the fact that a child was treated a certain way depending on where he or she was born in line with his or her siblings. Getting to Know Yourself wants you to learn more.

The first born of a family was treated in a certain way, and the baby of the family was often treated in a much different way. Those children born in the middle were treated in yet another way. No, it probably wasn’t fair to the children, but it was the norm and people did not think much of it.

The truth is, we are today the result of what happened to us as children. Today’s adults who were first born have a distinctive style of behavior that is very often much different than the behavior of adults who were raised as the baby of the family. In many cases, this is not a good thing.

Some people would use the term “baggage,” and that is pretty accurate. We bring with us into adulthood certain characteristics, mannerisms, and behaviors as if they were burlap sacks tied securely to our backs. And, again, this is not always a good thing.
