We have all heard the stories of how the first born of a family is treated in comparison to the last born of a family. Many of us have actually grown up in families where the position of birth dictated the treatment of the child moreso than any other reason. The youngest sibling in a family might have been pampered to the exclusion of the other children. The first born might have been seen as some kind of honored guest and treated accordingly. The scenarios can be different for each family, but the gem of the thought stays the same: We are today the product of how we were treated as children.

In some respects, this is normal and good. In other respects, it can cause problems. This is why birth order and marriage problems are so closely connected.

If you were the baby of the family when you were a child chances are you brought some of that upbringing into adulthood with you. As such, chances are even better still that you are bringing some of that into your relationships with other people, including your husband or wife.

If you were the first born of your siblings, the same holds true, except the dynamics are different for you. If you had many responsibilities as a child and learned to be very independent as a child, you more than likely have carried that with you into adulthood. In your case, you may find it difficult to get along with others if they do not see things your way right off the bat.

Regardless of your birth number in the family, you have some baggage that you brought with you into adulthood. And it is that baggage that often causes us problems in life and in our relationships.
